Eastern Promises 2 reunites Cronenberg, Mortensen, Cassel

After years of speculation, it’s been confirmed: there will be a sequel to Eastern Promises, and many of the original creative forces will be involved. The film will reunite director David Cronenberg and screenwriter Steven Knight, with stars Viggo Mortensen and Vincent Cassel reprising their roles.

According to Vulture, the plot will pick up right where the first film ended. Kirill (Cassel) believes that he has inherited the position of his crime-lord father, not knowing that his own driver Nikolai (Mortensen, seen above with authentic tattoos that Russian criminals get when making sequels) is really an undercover FSB agent.

Shooting on Eastern Promises 2: Seven Promises of a Promise Keeper won’t begin until next year. Mortensen is set to work on The Two Faces of January in the fall, and Cronenberg may start the long-gestating film Maps of the Stars with his Cosmopolis star Robert Pattinson.
