Elizabeth Banks to direct Pitch Perfect 2

Pitch Perfect was a splendid surprise back when it released in 2012. It’s funny (but not exactly brilliant), has cool women that do cool things, and the music’s pretty fly (“Cups” ended being one of 2013’s biggest singles). It’s one of those movies that shouldn’t have worked as well as it did, but it did. After the sequel was announced for a release in 2015, I wrote an article claiming that a sequel would be a bad idea given it follows a very distinct Bring It On pattern. Maybe I shouldn’t be so worried.

Universal has signed Elizabeth Banks, who made the first Pitch Perfect a possibility, to direct the sequel. Kay Cannon is still writing and there’s no harder release date than the vague 2015 window. Although I’m a little weary of her directing abilities since the only the I’ve seen of hers is a sketch in Movie 43, she’s a talented woman and I can’t wait to see what she can do with her feature directorial debut.
