By Thursday night’s elecTRONica meet-up sponsored by Disney Parks Blog was probably one of the cooler non-con fan events I’ve been to in a while. Obviously, it was an event meant specifically for Disney Parks Blog members, so it was a little light on content, but that didn’t stop a lot of creative, hardcore Tron fans from coming out and kicking some serious costume-wearing butt. The couple I chose for the header were my favorite. I wish I had gotten a good shot of them in black light, because under a black light, it was insane how much they looked like they jumped straight out of the 1982 original. My cohort and photographer, community member Elemeno_P, and I arrived at California Adventure right at 4:00PM so we could get into the signing, featuring the film’s writers, Edward Kitsis and Adam Horowitz. We received our info for the whole meet-up, along with some snazzy Flynn’s Arcade coins. We farted around the park for a couple hours, since nothing began until 8:00. However. We saw some of the stuff that was being setup.
And if you think that was cool, check it out at night.
It’s a crappy picture, yeah, but it looks so boss all lit up. There was also a roving spotlight hung underneath it that would stop on passers-by and sort them into the game grid. A cool little touch for entering the area. After watching the opening ceremony, the elecTRONica dance number featuring dancers in costume from 80s chic to Tron-y goodness. The theme of the night seemed to be super reflective paint on black jumpsuits, so we got a lot of pictures where the details of various costumes really shined, but the rest was sadly obscured. Still, there were some seriously cool costumes, and these guys here were some of my favorites.
The main event in all this was the back area that housed various costume pieces and costume art for Tron: Legacy. My personal favorite was the original concept for Siren, played by Serinda Swan. Her original design had no mouth. There is nothing scarier to me than human-ish characters with no mouth.

There were also some costume pieces, including Kevin Flynn’s(Jeff Bridges) robe…
…and Sam Flynn’s(Garret Hedlund) light-up suit.
There is some cool work going on here. I also really dug all the various lightcycle redesign concepts, which you can find in the gallery below. There was also a brief sneak-peak at the film, accompanied by a silly picture of the writer in 3D glasses.
There wasn’t a lot in here that hasn’t been seen in other trailers, though. The highlight of the reel was Sam’s introduction into the Grid. As he’s taken off into a Recognizer, we see a program with a partially de-rezzed face, and it looks cool. He’s then sent off to a different room, where a group of Sirens disrobe him and suit him up like a proper Program, as well as give him his identity disc. The best part is how the Sirens are built into the designs of the room, emerging to do their task and disappearing back into their corners. If nothing else, Tron: Legacy is going to be a serious visual treat. On top of that, we got more glimpses of Daft Punk’s soundtrack, and it is going to be amazing. Face-melting-ly so. I also got to meet briefly with the writers, Edward Kitsis and Adam Horowitz, for a signing. I asked them about the Ouija movie they’re working on, but they were coy with details. If only my business cards had arrived! I could have been all slick and cool! Instead, I posed for a picture like the goof I am.
The evening ended with a trip to Flynn’s Arcade, which carried a large number of cool 80s arcade games, including Space Paranoids and Tron, both specially created for the series of Flynn’s Arcade events that popped up over the past two years. Sadly, we weren’t treated to a secret door opening up onto a cool nightclub area. Still, awesome games were awesome!
At the end, my companion and I were psyched for the whole trip, and it showed us some pretty cool Tron: Legacy stuff. Tron Legacy comes out December 17th, and I’m sure as hell going to be there.
