By Seems like Vin Diesel fans gotta get their fix, but don’t feel like paying for it. TorrentFreak has released some of its stats for the past year, and topping the list of most pirated movies in 2011 is Fast Five, the film written by a five-year-old (not really). The movie was downloaded over 9 million times, which sounds crippling to its bottom line until you realize it still pulled in over $600 million in worldwide grosses.
Some may see this as a decline in illegal downloading, as legal alternatives rise in prominence. (For comparison, 2010’s most pirated film was Avatar, with over 16 million downloads.) However, TorrentFreak notes that the number of BitTorrent users is mostly holding steady, so it could just be that film piracy was more distributed in 2011.
The other top ten pirated movies skew towards the sci-fi and fantasy genres, with some of the exceptions likely getting download boosts from the Oscar buzz last year. Also of note is the high number of downloads for Sucker Punch, which means that there are probably a lot of people who wanted to see just how bad it was without paying for it.
