Ferrell and Galifianakis may team up for political comedy

Jay Roach has directed some pretty successful comedies, most notably Austin Powers and Meet the Parents. Now, he’s trying to sell a pitch this week for a new political comedy tying in to the 2012 elections. FirstShowing reports that the film would see Will Ferrell and Zach Galifianakis as political rivals competing to be the next President of the United States.

Ferrell is no stranger to politics, possessing some political “experience” portraying George W. Bush on Saturday Night Live. Considering Galifianakis’s general demeanor, I could see him representing the Democratic side of things. Director Jay Roach is also comfortable with the subject matter, directing HBO’s Recount, an Emmy-winning film about the turmoil surrounding the 2000 election. Naturally, this new project will likely be a lot less dramatic and a lot more comedic, considering the stars Roach is pulling in.

There’s no word on a script yet, as the project is still being shopped around, but apparently the studios are fairly interested. I’m certainly sold. Having Galifianakis around to temper Ferrell’s energy might be comedy gold.
