First look at the Guillermo Del Toro produced Pinocchio

Raise your hand if you didn’t think that a Pinocchio puppet based on Gris Grimly’s slightly disturbing take on the character and created under the supervision of Guillermo Del Toro and The Jim Henson Company was going to be really creepy. All those with your hands raised haven’t been paying very much attention.

Bleeding Cool got this image of the titular character for the upcoming film Pinocchio and he is pretty much the opposite of Disney’s rendition. Grimly, who is set to direct the film, has been tweeting all over the place about it. Not only did he provide the image you see here, but he also revealed that MacKinnon and Saunders would be doing all the builds for the film’s puppets. They’re pretty much the people you go to when you want stop motion done right. This little guy in particular isn’t actually one of the puppets being used in the film, but it gives us a good idea of what they’ll look like once production gets under way.

We know that Del Toro can twist fairy tales to some dark places and Henson has been doing it since Dark Crystal so I’m guessing that even if this new Pinocchio doesn’t hit it’ll get well a deserved cult following.
