By Baz Luhrmann’s 3D (sigh) adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby will be released on Christmas Day next year and the first official images were released today. Leaked photos from the set have already shown the main cast in costume and Carey Mulligan’s rather unflattering hairstyle, but these official shots give a clearer sense of the movie’s visual style and the first glimpse of Joel Edgerton’s Tom Buchanan.
It’s a relief that Luhrmann’s tendency towards garish excess doesn’t seem to have taken hold, even if the costumes for Carey Mulligan’s Daisy are a tad over-designed. DiCaprio, Edgerton and Maguire all look correct for their respective roles and Mulligan certainly has the charm and delicate beauty to make the most of hers.
