First teaser for upcoming Italian adaptation of Pinocchio

Though the trailer is only in Italian, and without the film remains without an international release date (yet!), Matteo Garrone’s Pinocchio looks almost like a film you can enjoy without understanding a word of it.

No way around it, Pinocchio looks gorgeous. Working with Nicolai Bruel, cinematographer on his recent film Dogman, Matteo Garrone is perhaps under-appreciated in the US, but is one of Italy’s foremost filmmakers. He’s perhaps best-known for Gomorrah, his 2008 crime film detailing, in bleak realism, the machinations of contemporary Italian crime families.

Starring Italian comic Roberto Benigni as Geppetto, Garrone’s Pinocchio looks to capture the sense of wonder found in fables while retaining the necessary edge to keep things perilous when the going gets tough.

No date is set for international release, but Pinocchio hits Italian theaters this Christmas.
