An underrated film I really liked a few years ago was Richard Linklater’s adaptation of Philip K. Dick’s A Scanner Darkly. Outside of the film’s narrative of a cop-turned-junkie torn between his internal struggle with reality (and the film’s stellar cast of Robert Downey, Jr., Winona Ryder, Keanu Reeves, and Woody Harrelson), what helped it stick out was Linklater’s use of rotoscoping to make the film appear cartoon-like.
This Flix For Short, If I Am Your Mirror, is a graduate thesis film from Georgia State University alum Garrett DeHart. Inspired by Edgar Allen Poe’s The Tell-Tale Heart, it’s about a Civil War veteran (played by the late Batman Begins and Memento actor Larry Holden) struggling with the effects of PTSD as he faces hanging. The film was shot in a chromakey studio (similar to green screen) with DeHart working on post-production for two years to develop the oil painting-like effect seen in the film.
