Flixist Awards 2010: Most Promising New Filmmaker

It’s always interesting to experience a brand new director’s first feature film. Though sometimes it results in amateurish slop, more often than not we’re given a film that is both refreshing and takes chances. As we approach an age where who’s directing becomes more important than the stars attached to a project, it’s only right that we take an early interest at the promising filmmakers of tomorrow.

Despite the fact that 2010 produced a lot of phenomenal films directed by seasoned seniors, it doesn’t mean that the freshman class was slacking off one bit. And it’s not your typical fair of indie flicks either, as these newcomers have produced everything from an understated entry to the monster movie genre to a delightful glimpse into the world of street art and even a sequel to a much beloved Disney property. Find out who to keep an eye on after the jump.

Coming from across the pond, it’s Gareth Edwards for the win! Though I had my own issues with Monsters, my Flixist brethren agree in that we were amazed at what was accomplished by Gareth Edwards and his guerilla filmmaking (our own Sean Walsh has a bit of a man crush on him). Mr. Edwards was able to create a strong entry in the monster movie genre with nothing more than an idea, a limited budget, a set of “prosumer” cameras and knowledge in special effects. Gareth’s future is already looking promising as he’s been trusted with the Godzilla franchise, and I for one can’t wait to see what he does with the reboot. Hell, it can’t be worse than the previous attempt at rebooting the franchise.

That’s not to say that the other n00bz were overlooked, as we had high praise for all the other nominees. Though I haven’t seen Submarine yet, I’m just astonished to find out that Saboo from The Mighty Boosh directed a film. I definitely have to check that one out.

What do you think of our nominees? Did we miss any other new filmmakers? Feel free to discuss.
