By Darren Aronofsky has gone from independent auteur to smash hit director almost over night, and his smash hit hasn’t even hit theaters. By this I mean Black Swan, produced by Aronofsky’s Protozoa Pictures, with distribution rights going to Fox Searchlight. Fox has also put Aronofsky in charge of the next installment of its Wolverine franchise, a will-he or won’t-he story that captivated the film press for weeks. News about The Wolverine continues to get better, especially with the latest, that Academy Award winning screenwriter Christopher McQuarrie (The Usual Suspects) has joined the project. So says a press release issued by the studio yesterday.
According to the same release, Fox and Aronofsky have now decided to form a more committed relationship, inking a two-year contract that will see Protozoa Pictures produce films under the auspices of both Twentieth Century Fox and Fox Searchlight.
Emma Watts, president of production at Twentieth Century Fox, had this to say: “We’re excited Darren is going to bring his unique vision to The Wolverineand we take great satisfaction that Fox, irrespective of the size of his films, continues to provide a home for his extraordinary talent.” These are the sort of relationships…

However, with Aronofsky heading up his own company within the studio, I think we can be confident that what we see from the director in the future is what he wants us to see.
