GoT showrunners’ Star Wars film confirmed to follow Episode IX

At today’s MoffetNathanson Media & Communications summit, Disney Chairman Bob Iger confirmed that the follow up to this year’s Episode IX – The Rise of Skywalker would be a feature film by Game of Thrones co-showrunners David Benioff and DB Weiss.

Details are vague, with Iger saying “the next [Star Wars] movie that we release will be theirs, and we’re not saying anything more about that.” Weiss and Benioff are well-regarded for their writing on Game of Thrones, though they’ve dabbled in directing the fantasy series from time to time; the duo directed once in seasons three and four, and the upcoming series finale is set to conclude the eight season series under their direction. Whether they’ll be directing as well as writing the next Star Wars film remains to be seen.

The general temperature on the announcement seems a little hesitant, with Game of Thrones‘ still-airing eighth season facing varying degrees of fan and critical passion, so the attitude towards the new film or films remains to be seen.

With Last Jedi director Rian Johnson still tinkering with his own trilogy of films and upcoming streaming service Disney+ playing host to the likes of The Mandalorian, there’s no shortage of galactic gallivanting to undertake.
