Everyone loves a good monster team-up. At least, that’s what this weekend’s box office tells me. Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, which took the top honors, opened domestically to $80 million and pulled an overseas gross of $114 million for a grand total of $193.9 million thus far. With a projected budget of around $135 million, that is an absolutely incredible start for the movie. Anything else from here is basically profit.
Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire (how are there two films with Empire in the title out at the same time?) fell off pretty harshly with a 65% decline in profit. It still came in second but only managed an extra $15.6 million. That film’s budget of $100 million is unlikely to be fully recouped as even if we consider international gross, the movie has generated roughly $108 million total. Marketing is what will sink it.
From here out, it’s mostly a bunch of films from previous weeks. Dune: Part Two, which landed in third, is still trucking along and made another $11.3 million. Kung Fu Panda 4, coincidentally in fourth, hasn’t been able to top Dune again, but $10.2 million more in revenue is solid. Immaculate rounds out the top five and brought another $3.2 million, making it profitable with some wiggle room. It’s overall pretty solid for Hollywood right now.
