Goetz brothers set to direct Martyr remake

Martyrs may still be one of the more disturbing films I’ve ever seen, and it’s even harder to decide if I liked it or not. A US remake of the film has been kicking around since the movie debuted in 2008, but it seemed pretty dead for the past few years. That is until this European Film Market poster cropped up announcing the movie is getting made and the Goetz brothers (Scenic Route) would be directing.

Remakes of foreign horror films almost never work out. They’re usually tamed down for wider audiences and rarely push the boundaries that the original do. That’s probably especially true for Martyrs, which pushed almost every boundary ever. My guess is that most of the horror will be ripped away and we’ll be left with nothing but more Hostel style torture porn.
