HBO reveals House of the Dragon is in full swing

Dragon

When Game of Thrones ended, speculation about spinoffs and prequels ran rampant. At one point, HBO was rumored to be entertaining the idea of multiple GoT related materials, which has since slimmed down quite considerably. As a pandemic halted, delayed, or canceled shows across various platforms, House of the Dragon is on its way to a tv screen near you.

Based on George R.R. Martin’s book Fire & Ice and set 300 years before Jon Snow hooked up with his aunt, House of the Dragon follows the Targaryen clan in a time when dragons roamed the skies above Valyria before its destruction. The Targaryen bloodline was often mentioned in GoT, with so few remaining in the world, as was the mystery of dragons until Dany hatched a few and tried taking over the Seven Kingdoms.

While other spinoffs met the chopping blockHouse of the Dragon is pushing forward, as the cast got together for a table reading, per HBO’s Twitter:

To help get things off on the right foot, GoT regular Miguel Sapochnik is on board as co-showrunner with Ryan Condal, and will also direct the pilot along with some additional episodes. Sapochnik directed some of the most memorable episodes of GoT, including “Hardhome” and “Battle of the Bastards”. Starring in the show is Eve Best as Rhaenys Velaryon, Paddy Considine as Viserys Targaryen, Olivia Cooke as Alicent Hightower, Matt Smith as Daemon Targaryen, Emma D’Arcy as Rhaenyra Targaryen, and Fabien Frankel as Criston Cole.

House of the Dragon is slated for release sometime in 2022.
