Hugh Jackman joins Blomkamp’s Chappie

Chappie, Neill Blomkamp’s next science fiction opus, is going to have a tough time getting over that name, but casting Hugh Jackman in a role should help it. He’s come on for an unconfirmed role in the film, which involves an android cop (played by Blomkamp regular Sharlto Copley) who works in the slums of Johannesburg when he is kidnapped by two thugs who want to use him for their own nefarious means.

Bleeding Cool says that Jackman may be taking on the roll of a CEO who ends up on the wrong side of the gangsters, but Blomkamp is keeping details pretty tight on this one. He has said that it’s going to be a bit of a comedy with a big, heartfelt story.

Much like District 9 was an expansion on one of Blomkamp’s short, Chappie is a very expanded look at the ideas in his short film Tetra Vaal. You can check that one out below.
