Hunger Games breaks midnight screening record

In case you had any doubt that The Hungers Games is a massive phenomenon here’s some news to set you straight. The film just broke the world record for ticket sales for a midnight screening that wasn’t for a sequel. The film pulled in $19.7 million and that puts it first for non-sequels and seventh in the grand scheme of midnight openings.

It’s a fantastic figure for a non-sequel though it does pale a bit to the number one, which goes to Deathly Hallows – Part 2 at $40.3 million. It’s also behind all three of the Twilight film sequels, but out of the gate neither Potter nor Twilight did as well. Plus, the movie didn’t open at Wednesday screenings so the weekend won’t be as front loaded and the film could easily catch up in the total made. In our opinion it richly deserves to.
