Independent Spirit Awards nominations have arrived

It’s getting to be that time of year! Awards season is coming upon us and the early nominations award nominations are in. The Independent Spirit Awards are kind of the indy Oscars, but everyone gets drunk and actually has fun at the show (happening March 1 of 2014). Of course in this day and age you’ve heard of every one of these indy films since even independent movies are big money. But enough with the jawing. Who are the big nomination winners?

12 Years a Slave pulled in seven nominations with Nebraska following close behind with six. Both have amazing performances and incredible directing so the nominations (even a surprise one for Will Forte in Nebraska) are well deserved. You’ll also see Upstream Color in there for Best Director and Best Editing, but not Best Film. In my opinion that’s entirely fair since it had amazing direction and editing, but on the whole didn’t come together quite as well as it should. The biggest snub for me has to be a lack of Greta Gerwig for her performances in the underrated Frances Ha. Also, I was hoping that at leas the Spirit Awards would recognize how awesome Prince Avalanche was, but alas they did not.
