Is Dr. Strange coming to theaters in 2013?

With The Avengers coming next year and the combined total gross of all the other Marvel Studios movies approaching fifty thousand billion trillion dollars, Marvel is searching for the next superhero to bring in them multi-millions. Since Joe Cornish and Edgar Wright’s Ant Man movie is AWOL at the moment, it looks like Dr. Strange may be our newest Marvel character. Marvel asked for a Dr Strange script back in 2010 from writers Thomas Donnelly and Joshua Oppenheimer, who recently worked on the Conan reboot and the less-than well received Cowboys and Aliens. They’ve recently turned the script into Marvel, and Marvel is reportedly creating a shortlist of directors for the film, as well as someone to “oversee continued development” on the project, with all signs pointing towards a 2013 release.

For those uninitiated, Dr. Stephen Strange was a massively talented, yet arrogant surgeon who lost the use of his hands in a car accident. In the way that these people do, he eventually discovers a secret order of magic and becomes the Earth’s Sorcerer Supreme. He’s actually a very cool character, and this is a film that would let Marvel really expand their supernatural universe, as Thor turned out more cosmic than magical. Also, if you’re interested in reading an absolutely amazing series of ideas for Dr. Strange stories, check out Mighty God King’s “Why I should write Dr. Strange” series. Since Marvel obviously reads all of my work, they’d do well to get Mighty God King to work with them in some capacity.

Personally, I don’t have a clue who could make a good Dr. Strange, but I’m not a massive fan of the character. Who do you guys think would make a great Strange?

(The header, if you’re into it, is some work from the awesome illustrator Gabriele Dell’Otto, and he’s amazing.)
