Jay-Z will score Baz Luhrmann’s The Great Gatsby

The most recent trailer for Baz Luhrmann’s The Great Gatsby featured Filter’s abysmal cover of “Happy Together.” I hope that song doesn’t wind up in the final film. But even if it does, at least the score will be interesting. Turns out that Jay-Z will be composing original music for the film. Jay-Z’s 100th problem, by the way, is that weak-ass cover of “Happy Together.”

As Jordan Raup at The Film Stage points out, Craig Armstrong is currently credited with the original score for Luhrmann’s film, so it’s a bit unclear what Jay-Z’s involvement will be. There’s also speculation that Prince and Lady Gaga will contribute some music to The Great Gatsby. Look for more details in the coming months.

Even if this movie winds up being a gaudy mess that misses the boat entirely, I’m eager to hear what Jay-Z brings to the film. (I was actually thinking about what Madlib could’ve done with the score given Shades of Blue and Beat Konducta, but that’s a bit of a tangent.) In the gallery, some new Gatsby images. The Great Gatsby comes out May 10th, 2013.
