Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley eyed for Dungeons & Dragons film

In a new report from Deadline, it looks like directors Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley are being eyed to helm the upcoming Dungeons & Dragons adaptation. The two are currently in talks with Paramount and Hasbro and everything is said to be coming together quickly. It looks like we won’t have much longer to wait to figure out how this new version will stack up to the eternal 2000 classic…

The director duo most recently produced Game Night, a film by New Line Cinema and Warner Bros. that was a dark comedy about a group of players getting kidnapped during some of their gaming sessions. Goldstein and Daley also wrote the script for the successful Spider-Man: Homecoming, which gives some clout to their name. Apart from Dungeons & Dragons, both are attached to direct The Flash for DC whenever that comes to light.

My only hope for any new adaptations is that Hollywood has come to accept gaming as a legitimate entertainment medium. As awful as the 2000 Dungeons & Dragons film with Marlon Wayans was, you could understand why a studio would crank out such a shoddy film during that era. No one took video games that seriously and even fantasy films hadn’t had their comeuppance until a year later with Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings. We’re now in a post-LoTR era and comic book films dominate the box office, so more care should be taken this time.

Whatever happens, at least the film is looking to end up in good hands.
