Josh Trank to also direct standalone Star Wars film

He might not have made it on Alec’s recent list of dream Star Wars spin-off directors, but honestly, who even saw this coming? Josh Trank (Chronicle, and Fox’s upcoming reboot of Fantastic Four) has now been tapped to direct one of Disney’s planned Star Wars standalone films that’ll release in between the saga episodes.

Assuming his new film won’t be in shot first person, you’d have to admit that’d be pretty neat. As proof, here’s a video he once did that showed off just that. We’ll keep an eye out for more details, but don’t expect any hearty stuff for awhile.

In addition to the episodes of a new Star Wars trilogy, Lucasfilm and Disney continue development of multiple stand-alone movies that will offer new stories beyond the core Saga. The newest director to come on board is Josh Trank.

“We’re thrilled to welcome Josh into the family,” says Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy. “He is such an incredible talent and has a great imagination and sense of innovation. That makes him perfectly suited to Star Wars, and for this new slate of movies that reach beyond the core characters and storylines of Episodes I through IX.”
