Kevin Feige is developing a Star Wars film

In a new report from The Hollywood Reporter, it has come to light that Marvel Studios’ Kevin Feige will be developing a new Star Wars film for Disney. With the sequel trilogy coming to an end this year, Lucasfilms’ Kathleen Kennedy has been “pursuing a new era in ‘Star Wars‘ storytelling,” and immediately thought of Feige. The Marvel exec is a massive fan of the brand and it only made sense that he’d eventually get his hands on Disney’s other big cash cow.

The deal came to be in the last few months. A late summer meeting between Kennedy and Lucasfilms’ co-chairmen Alan Horn and Alan Bergman came to the conclusion that Feige should get involved. His success with the MCU speaks volumes, especially with multiple films breaking the $1 billion global box-office gross.

Speaking to Hollywood Reporter, Horn said, “We are excited about the projects Kathy and the Lucasfilm team are working on, not only in terms of Star Wars but also Indiana Jones and reaching into other parts of the company including Children of Blood and Bone with Emma Watts and Fox. With the close of the Skywalker Saga, Kathy is pursuing a new era in Star Wars storytelling, and knowing what a die-hard fan Kevin is, it made sense for these two extraordinary producers to work on a Star Wars film together.”

With the MCU still going strong and Star Wars becoming a bigger part of Disney’s physical presence, I doubt this announcement signals a sign of changing times. Kennedy is unlikely to leave her position and Feige already has a tremendous ship of his own to run. We’ll likely get a few films from him over the years alongside whatever Rian Johnson is cooking up.
