Kickstart and Live! The Duck Edition

0

[Kickstart and Live! is a series of articles letting you know about some of the cool film projects that are trying to get funding through Kickstarter. Each week (possibly), we feature five projects (probably) that you should give your money to (definitely).]

Hey! Here we are again. Since last week’s edition, all of the projects have seen some kind of financial increase, and one of them actually exceeded it’s goal! So that’s cool. Unfortunately, not all of the projects look like they’ll make it, but that’s the way it goes. Hopefully someone who tuned in last week decided to give some money to somebody, and if even one person helped one of those projects out, I feel completely justified in continuing this series.

This week, we’ve got some more good projects. We’re cutting back from five down to three, though, mostly because I didn’t want to highlight anything about a bunch of recent college graduates finding out how terrible life is. It’s ridiculous how many of those there are.

The Duck short film Kickstarter

[Project Kickstarter Page]

WHAT IT IS: An animated short film about a duck that falls in love with a rock.

WHY YOU SHOULD CARE: It’s an animated short film about a duck that falls in love with a rock. Seriously, do I need to say anything else? That’s the most wonderful thing ever. The fact that it is hand-drawn 2D animation done by a guy with an Ausralian accent (and is also Australian) should only further cement how amazing it’s going to be.

It’s also got some really amazing rewards. My favorite is the $500 tier, where you get a version of the film with your head instead of the ducks and bedtime stories told to you by the filmmaker. If I had $500 that I could spend on this, I would no longer have $500.

ZERO DAY documentary Kickstarter

[Project Kickstarter Page]

WHAT IT IS: A documentary about some of the shadier dealings that take place on the internet

WHY YOU SHOULD CARE: I don’t need to tell you how important the internet is. You know because you’re reading this article on the internet about a way to fund something through the internet. Maybe you don’t know much about some of the shadier things that go on, though, and that’s where this will theoretically come in.

There are still a lot of unknowns as far as what crimes it will go into and how deeply it will go into them, but it’s definitely shaping up to be interesting It’s also got some real clout behind it (including the BBC, which is helping produce it), so the filmmakers should be able to get some really good stuff.

cockroaches Kickstarter

[Project Kickstarter Page]

WHAT IT IS: A dark comedy action-thing that I’m pretty sure is about kidnapping the pope.

WHY YOU SHOULD CARE: Because it looks cool. The first line of the Kickstarter pitch (“cockroaches is a unique and original film shot in a fast paced style not shying away from gritty imagery and curse words” [emphasis mine]) put me off of it a little bit, for what I think are obvious reasons, but the above video won me over.

It’s not going to change the world, but it looks like it’s going to be a fun (and funny), well-made indie action comedy thriller whatever. The world could use more of those.
