Kurtzman & Orci are breaking up; Orci wants to direct Trek 3

If you’re not familiar with the Alex Kurtzman/Roberto Orci team, you probably haven’t been paying attention; the duo have their fingers in many a pot, including Xena: Warrior Princess, Fringe, Mission: Impossible III, and the first two Transformers movies, to name a few. After close to a decade of making enormous flicks together, the duo will be parting ways to focus on their individual projects. They’re still working together when it comes to TV, but I’m willing to bet those are more hands-off projects.

Kurtzman is currently tapped to direct the upcoming Venom movie, and the upcoming Amazing Spider-Man 2 still has a Kurztman/Orci script. But going forward, the film world may never see a Kurtzman/Orci script ever again.

They’ve also worked with J.J. Abrams on the Star Trek reboot, and it appears that Orci got that franchise in the divorce. He’ll be writing Star Trek 3 with Patrick McKay and John Payne, but that doesn’t seem to be enough.

Orci is currently lobbying Paramount for the position of Trek 3 director, which is a horrendous idea on multiple levels. Sure, let the man who claimed the tragic Boston bombing was an inside job direct the latest installment of a culturally significant franchise! Why not give Avengers 3 to Alex Jones, while we’re at it? Hey, let’s skip the movies entirely and just go piss on Gene Roddenberry’s grave!
