Lights Out director David F. Sandberg in talks to helm Shazam

Both The Flash and The Batman are having problems finding a director, which puts the DCEU in a pickle. In the case of the latter, Ben Affleck stepped out of the director’s chair and Matt Reeves recently declined the job. At least Shazam has a director in the pipeline. Whatever that’s worth.

Lights Out director David F. Sandberg is now in talks to handle Shazam. The film will star Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson as Shazam’s rival Black Adam. While the movie is slated for a 2019 release, no one else has been cast.

When I think of Shazam (once known as Captain Marvel, but renamed recently to differentiate the character from Marvel Comics’ Captain Marvel), I tend to think of a magical, all-ages Superman analog. Yet given Sandberg’s pedigree as a horror director, it seems like Shazam will be a grim and gritty superhero movie like most of the DCEU output. So much for variety.

Honestly, are you even remotely excited about this movie? Let us know in the comments.
