Lion King is now one of the top 10 grossing films

Lion King, man. It’s a good movie, and evidentially the people are still loving it. Not only did it take the top box office for both weeks of its two first two week run in 3D and 3rd this weekend, but the numbers it brought in have propelled it to number 10 on the all time highest grossing domestic films list. The new domestic grand total for the movie, which is still rolling out overseas, is $408.2 million.

The movie knocked Spider Man out of the top ten at $403.7 million and the recent Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, which sat at $402.1 million. Considering only $79.7 million (admittedly a staggering amount for a re-release) came from the 3D version, it’s even more impressive when you take in the fact that the original earned most of the money with lower ticket prices.

The animated film could shoot up even more since it hasn’t been yanked from theaters after doing so incredibly well. Hopefully this makes Disney make more original classics (like Tangled) and doesn’t prompt them to simply rerelease less impressive Disney classics in 3D.
