Live-action Powerpuff Girls casts its leading trio

The live-action series adaptation of The Powerpuff Girls, Craig McCracken’s classic Cartoon Network animated series, has found its leads for the titular roles of the crime-fighting trio.

Chloe Bennet has been cast as Blossom, Dove Cameron in the role of Bubbles, and Yana Perrault will portray Buttercup, forming the sugar, spice, and everything nice triad of superpowered heroes. With scripts by Diablo Cody and Heather Regnier, the series is being developed for The CW, and directed by Maggie Kiley, the series is a reboot of the animation, though taking the characters forward in time.

Described as “disillusioned twentysomethings,” the live-action Powerpuff Girls looks to tell the story of three young women who’ve “lost their childhood to crimefighting,” burdened with the Chemical X accident that courses through their veins.

The grown-up girls are written as more than just cartoon characters, Blossom’s fearless leadership giving way to anxiety and reclusiveness, while Buttercup’s tough-girl attitude hides a marked sensitivity. Caution would say that a deep-rooted character study of the ‘Girls is unnecessary, but the prospect of bringing animated characters to life demands a little more humanity, perhaps. Though whether or not we need a deeper read on The Powerpuff Girls remains to be seen, my hope is their rogue’s gallery of outlandish villains make appropriate appearances, or, at least, we get some new mugs for the Girls to take down. I mean, it isn’t The Powerpuff Girls without some Mojo Jojo, right?

Reserving judgement until we’ve got the goods in front of us, The Powerpuff Girls pilot doesn’t currently have a schedule set. With casting just confirmed, expect awhile longer to wait until we can return to Townsville.
