Lost King Kong reel from 1933 found behind UK cinema wall

During the renovation of the Grosvenor Café & Cinema, a worker found a false ceiling that revealed a hidden room containing one of the original copies of the 1933 King Kong classic special effects film. Ross McMillan almost threw the object out before a cinema staff member saw it and was overcome with a National Treasure movie moment.

It had been missing from RKO’s film vaults for so long that it racked up over $67,000 in late fees, though Universal Studios was gladly willing to waive all fees to see it safely returned after all these years. After the rest of the room was searched and cleared they then turned the mezzanine level into a bar and restaurant as part of their renovations.

To celebrate the re-opening of the Grosvenor Café this Friday, they’ll be playing the ancient King Kong reel one more time before handing it over, so if you live in the United Kingdom you might want to make plans to be a part of this minor historic moment. You can contact them at +44 845 166 6002 to reserve tickets.
