Mark Wahlberg will play Nathan Drake in Uncharted adaptation

Sorry, Nathan Fillion fans, but Uncharted’s Nathan Drake has been officially cast. Mark Wahlberg, in an interview with MTV’s Multiplayer Blog, officially announced that he would be playing the central role in David O. Russell’s Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune film. For those unfamiliar with Uncharted, it centers around Nathan Drake, a smart aleck treasure hunter who often thinks of no one but himself, despite having a heart of gold beneath the rough and tumble exterior. In Drake’s Fortune, and the superior sequel Among Thieves, he travels the world searching for lost artifacts, often with a slightly supernatural theme. If you’re thinking that sounds a lot like Indiana Jones, well, it’s not like Spielberg has done anything good with the property in years! Even though I am in that legion that thinks Nathan Fillion would have been perfect, Wahlberg’s an amazing actor, one that does both comedy and action very well, so I’m looking forward to this.

In addition, the captain of the Funky Bunch confirmed that Russell was looking for Robert De Niro and Joe Pesci to play Drake’s father and uncle, respectively. I was hoping De Niro would be up for Sullivan, Nathan’s cigar-chomping older partner, and I guess this could be a crappy way for Wahlberg to spoil a plot twist before the film’s even made, but it’s cool to see that there’s definitely going to be a larger look into theUncharted backstory rather than just a straight adaptation of either Drake’s Fortune or Among Thieves.
