Is there anything that Martin Freeman can’t do? From under-enthused office drone to galactic hitchhiker to a literal modern-day Dr. Watson, Martin Freeman has more range than Kansas. Well, now you can now add ‘furry-footed midget on an epic quest’ to the list.

Freeman will be playing the lead in Peter Jackson’s epic two-part The Hobbit, something Jackson couldn’t be more excited about. According to the mastermind behind the Lord of the Rings trilogy, there was “only ever been one Bilbo Baggins for us” and that Freeman is “intelligent, funny, surprising and brave – exactly like Bilbo.”

Joining Freeman are Richard Armitage (Captain America: The First Avenger), who will play Thorin Oakenshield, the leader of the dwarves that join Bilbo on his quest, and actors Rob Kazinsky (EastEnders), Aidan Turner (Being Human), Graham McTavish (Red Dwarf) and others including John Callen, Stephen Hunter, Mark Hadlow and Peter Hambleton, will all play Oakenshield’s subordinates.

The Hobbit is set for a two-part release in December 2012 and December 2013.
