Martyrs remake gets a director, no sign of K-Stew

We all know my feelings on the ineffable Dame Kristen Stewart, so imagine my disappointment when I heard she won’t be in the Martyrs remake. On the bright side, up-and-coming director Daniel Stamm (The Last Exorcism) has been announced to be taking the helm, although as much as I enjoyed Exorcism, he had this groan-inducing morsel to say about the project:

Martyrs is very nihilistic. The American approach [that I’m looking at] would go through all that darkness but then give a glimmer of hope. You don’t have to shoot yourself when it’s over.”

Back in the day, you didn’t need a shiny, happy bow wrapped around your super-messed up movies. The remake of the classic Craven exploitation film Last House on the Left was also guilty of changing the story so the softer, cuddlier audience of today would be able to sleep a little more soundly at night. The original Martyrs is not soft or cuddly, and it’s worrisome to hear about any sort of glimmer of hope being involved. When did nihilism stop being so appealing?
