Mickey Rourke takes on Gareth Thomas role, gay rugby player

Not a gay rugby player, a rugby player who is gay. After spending some time with Gareth Thomas — the famous rugby player who became even more famous when he came out a year ago and announced that he was gay — Mickey feels it’s an important wording issue worth pointing out.

After his shocking announcement last year, Sports Illustrated claimed that he’s the only openly gay team athlete in the word, which is why it shouldn’t be a surprise that Hollywood swooped down and quickly plans to turn the story into a film. I doubt SI’s claim is true, but I’ll admit I’m already interested in the movie project just by seeing Gareth’s charismatic and crazy face above. Not only has Rourke announced that he’d be taking on Gareth’s physically taxing role in the unnamed film, but also that he’ll be learning Welsh along the way.

I like Rourke almost as much as most people, but is anyone else doubting Rourke on this role choice? Maybe it’s that The Wrestlerhas me thinking of Mickey as physically weak, but I don’t see him as an ideal cast candidate when it comes to charisma either. He’s surprised me before, so…
