Monster Hunter hits home media on March 2, 2021

Despite knowing that films typically have a three-month window between theatrical release and home release, I’m still quite shocked at how quickly Monster Hunter is heading home. The Milla Jovovich starring film that got off to a rocky debut in China with its casually racist “joke” will be hitting DVD, Blu-Ray, and UHD Blu-Ray on March 2, 2021. I’m not sure I could recommend that last option when it is going for a sale price of $29.99.

Released in mid-December 2020 (which was only a month ago!), I’ve heard basically nothing about Monster Hunter since it came out. I suppose that makes sense, but I don’t even know of anyone that has seen the film. I was cautiously interested having played Monster Hunter World a fair amount, but it seems the film came and went without much fuss. Maybe that’s for the best.

That’s not to say the reception was positive. On Rotten Tomatoes, the film holds a paltry 49% approval rating. That’s not the worst thing around, but it’s hardly a film you should rush out to see. It’s also a rating that makes me question why physical media costs so damn much. There’s no reason why a DVD should be $20…or its MSRP of $31. That’s ridiculous.
