Movie based on the musical Wicked finally gets a release date

Great news for fans of Wicked, the sixth most longest running musical on Broadway. After tons of speculation about when it would get the inevitable movie treatment, we finally get a legitimate release date. December 22, 2021, is when we will see the movie make its debut on the silver screen. Ever since the show about how the Wicked Witch of the West is really not wicked and just misunderstood debuted, fans have been asking where is the movie? While it may not be happening anytime soon at least its good to see a confirmed release date.

By the time the film version hits theaters, it will be almost 20 years since the musical based on the novel Wicked: The Life and Times of The Wicked Witch of the West by Gregory Maguire debuted. According to Comicbook.com, Universal was supposed to release the film later this year but chose to instead focus on the film adaption of Cats. Wicked, which has grossed an amazing $1.3 billion since its inception, can it do the same at the box office?

While the film will, of course, have songs we all know and love from the original, it is also set to include two brand new songs. Hopefully Universal does this musical justice and it still holds the charm the original brought to Broadway and Wicked fans everywhere. Here’s hoping the popularity doesn’t die down before 2021, because unfortunately clicking our heels won’t make it come any faster.
