Neill Blomkamp’s Chappie gets 2015 release date

Neill Blomkamp’s Elysium failed to garner as much attention — or income — as his previous film, 2009’s District 9. However, Blomkamp is traipsing right on into his next project: Chappie, a light-hearted movie about a robot with artificial intelligence who is supposed to be used for police purposes who is kidnapped by some South African gangsters for use in their own nefarious affairs. Sony Pictures announced today that the film will be getting a March 2015 release date.

Sharlto Copley will be playing the voice of the robot and rap-rave duo Die Antwoord‘s Ninja and Yo-Landi Vi$$er are cast as the gangsters. Despite Blomkamp’s shaky sophomore feature film, I really, really enjoyed the short film that director Harmony Korine did last year staring Die Antwoord, so I think there’s some potential in the idea at this point. Maybe.
