New Midsommar trailer showcases a folksy freakout

Following a bombshell of a poster, we now have our closest look at Ari Aster’s upcoming Midsommar with its latest trailer. This gives us a peak at the relationship drama that builds up to a hellish festival in scenic Sweden.

Honestly, I have to say the dialogue and emoting here feel kind of stiff and lackluster. This is just a trailer, so I’m not going to make any grand assertions, but even in trailers for Hereditary you could feel the grief, terror, and helpless anguish leaking out of every crack and pour in its cast. After watching this, my expectations have been put somewhat in check.

I’m still excited, though. This is a different beast and perhaps will focus with a different tone and style which will fit these performances. The cult activities look neat, at turns gorgeous and ghoulish, and the mystery of how these festivities will end very much intrigues me.

We’ll get to see just how this new cast of unwitting victims are sacrificed to some kind of pagan god or whatever when Midsommar hits theaters on July 3, 2019.
