New Releases, week of 1/5/13: New Year’s Eve Edition

0

It’s a new year dawning, you guys and gals. That means lots of hope and promise in store… at least temporarily. For the first month of 2013, we will all proceed with confidence and grace — there will be a sense of victorious invulnerability like Wile E. Coyote just before his Acme products malfunction. The idea is to make that sensation last until you fall into a canyon or the jetpack explodes. (I am also available as a college commencement speaker, motivational expert, and semi-pro shoe shine boy.)

The big new release this week is Rian Johnson’s Looper, out today on DVD and Blu-ray. Out tomorrow is David Cronenberg’s Cosmopolis, one of the most divisive films of 2012. Our own Alex Katz hated the hell out of the movie, as did most of my friends who saw it. One buddy of mine, however, says it was one of his favorite movies of 2012, though it’s some weird thing that’s not quite a movie. Red Lights with Cillian Murphy and Robert De Niro also appears on New Year’s Day.

Check out what’s new this week on DVD and Blu-ray after the cut. There’s also a bit of New Year’s fun waiting for you, because the old folks want to hear “The Ice of Boston.”
