By Guillermo Del Toro’s Pacific Rim hits stores today, meaning the movie may turn a decent profit yet on top of the Chinese box office returns. By far, this is the biggest new release this week, with The Heat starring Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy and the remake of Maniac starring Elijah Wood being the other two notable new releases we’ve seen. Also worth looking into are Johnnie To’s critically acclaimed Drug War and the Danish thriller A Hijacking, which is apparently a fine film about Somali piracy a la Captain Phillips. There’s also Birdemic 2: The Resurrection if you’re into that kind of thing.
On the re-release side, the Criterion Collection is putting out a Blu-ray of Georges Franju’s wonderful Eyes Without a Face, there’s a Blu-ray out for Robert Wise’s chilling 1963 horror classic The Haunting, Kino is issuing out a remastered edition of Orson Welles’ The Stranger, there’s a Blu-ray version of Slap Shot, and a whole lot of two-packs, three-packs, four-packs, and ten-packs.
