New Releases, week of 11/17/12: “Excellent” edition

If you didn’t blow all of your money last week on the Barnes and Noble/Criterion half-off sale, you can try to get the job done this week. New Releases comes back to you now at the turn of the tide.

I’m looking forward to finally checking out 2 Days in New York (bit of a Julie Delpy fan), Todd Solondz’s Dark Horse, and Brave. (This also means I’ll be able to read Jenika’s Princess Review for Brave.) Also interested in seeing Makoto Shinkai’s anime feature Children Who Chase Lost Voices, which wasn’t on my radar before but looks fantastic.

Two other notable new releases are Oliver Stone’s Savages and the alien invasion comedy The Watch. Wasn’t interested in seeing either, and I expect these two also-rans to show up in bargain bins within six months. If you do see them in the bargain bin, just remember that you’re always better off buying Blind Fury starring Rutger Hauer. Always.

There are some really cool things on the re-release side as well, including Blu-ray debuts for Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure and Lawrence of Arabia. (The header depicts actual world history.) A Very Harold & Kumar 3D Christmas gets ultimate editioned, three rarely-seen Otto Preminger films have surfaced, and there’s an awesome-looking Pasolini box set from Criterion — his life-affirming, non-Salo movies.

Check out the list of new releases after the cut.
