New Releases, week of 12/15/12: “Dragon Sound” edition

Today you can enjoy Miami Connection in the comfort of your own home. Yes, the Citizen Kane of Florida-based taekwondo movies has arrived on DVD, Blu-ray, and limited edition VHS. (That makes Miami Connection more hardcore than Michel Gondry’s Be Kind Rewind.) In our interview with star/co-director Grandmaster Y.K. Kim, I got a sense that the positive response to his kitsch masterpiece was the last thing he expected, especially 25 years after he’d made the movie.

Notable new releases this week include The Bourne Legacy, Ted, and Ice Age: Continental Drift. The Korean anthology film Doomsday Book also comes out today, though it really should have received a special 12/21 release to coincide with that dumb Mayan bulls**t. One movie no longer coming out this week is Age of the Hobbits, a direct-to-video rip-off/knock-off of The Hobbit. A California federal judge blocked the release of Age of the Hobbits yesterday saying that it will likely cause consumer confusion. (Trailer after the cut.)

Two big releases from Criterion this week: there’s Christopher Nolan’s first film, Following, which is a stylish bit of noir, and there’s the masterful Qatsi Trilogy from Godfrey Reggio, three of the finest avant-garde documentaries every made. Rounding out re-releases are a special edition of Jane Campion’s Portrait of a Lady, a big Buster Keaton box set, and bunch of Blu-ray debuts including Dick Tracy, Babes in Toyland, Heavyweights, and Bill Cunningham New York, which was my favorite documentary of 2011.

Check out what’s new on DVD, Blu-ray, and VHS after the cut.
