By Howdy, folks, and welcome to this week’s new releases, a sort of pre-Tribeca reprieve for me. This week boasts two genre deconstructions. The biggie is Quentin Tarantino’s Django Unchained, starring Jamie Foxx (who, as Nick points out, was the not main character of the film) and Christoph Waltz. The other this week is Peter Chan’s Dragon (Wu Xia) starring the one and only Donnie Yen and genre legend Jimmy Wang Yu.
On the re-release side, the Criterion Collection has two awesome things coming out. First off, there’s Alex Cox’s Repo Man, a cult film par excellence starring Emilio Estevez and Harry Dean Stanton. If you’ve never seen it, this is a great chance to finally check it out. There’s also a Criterion box set for Japanese director Masaki Kobayashi, best known for Kwaidan (check out community member CountZeroOR’s review here) and his epic trilogy The Human Condition. This Eclipse Series box set contains four other Kobayashi films that explore his artistic growth: The Thick-Walled Room, I Will Buy You, Black River, The Inheritance.
