New Releases, week of 8/3/13: NY Drafthouse Edition

Guys! The first New York Alamo Drafthouse is opening this weekend! Sure, it’s up in Yonkers and a bajillion miles from my apartment, but I’m going to do my darndest to get up there. It’s staff training weekend, so there’ll be discount tickets for the older movies as well as half-off all food and drink orders (excluding alcohol… probably for the best). In addition to rep screenings of Singin’ In the Rain, The Shining, and Fantastic Mr. Fox, you’ll also be able to catch 2 Guns, The Way Way Back, and two fine Drafthouse docs: The Act of Killing and A Band Called Death. But the first of the New York Drafthouses is not the only thing that’s new this week. The new biggies on the DVD/Blu-ray front are G.I. Joe: Retaliation (just make a Snake Eyes movie already, you mooks) and Justice League: The Flashpoint Paradox. With the Criterion Collection sale still ongoing, you’ll be happy to know that the Criterion release of Guillermo del Toro’s The Devil’s Backbone is out now as well. There’s also a collector’s edition of John Carpenter’s The Fog on DVD and Blu-ray.
