New trailer for Ad Astra paints interstellar intrigue

Director James Gray’s science-fiction mystery Ad Astra, starring Brad Pitt, arrives today with a new trailer further fleshing out its mysterious space-faring adventure. Tommy Lee Jones, Ruth Nega, Liv Tyler, and Donald Sutherland co-star.

Roy McBride (Brad Pitt) is an accomplished astronaut following in the footsteps of his father (Tommy Lee Jones), who went missing years ago and is presumed dead. Though new developments suggest his involvement in a potentially-catastrophic event for the Earth, prompting Roy to pursue a man whose existence is still in question.

For some fun: The title’s latin translates to “to the stars.” Makes some sense!

James Gray last gave us the gorgeous The Lost City of Z in 2017, making some of the striking images in Ad Astra make a whole lot of sense. Lost City was shot by the legendary Darius Khondji (Seven, The Immigrant), while Ad Astra’s cinematographer is the equally-talented Hoyte Van Hoytema (Dunkirk, Let the Right One In). Basically, Ad Astra‘s going to be a good-looking film at the very least.

After a slight delay, Ad Astra will be hitting theaters September 20, 2019.
