I’m still very much as excited for Pitch Perfect 2 as I was in our staff’s Most Anticipated of 2015 list, but this newest trailer for it worries me a bit. Sure it’s got the same lovable 80s movie cheese (lol European super group with changing accents), and great sounding music, but like the first it’s already got some derogatory fat shaming humor. “Fat Amy” was one of my hugest problems (pun not intended, sorry) with the first film, and we’ve got a lot of it here.
Rather than have her just be funny or hilariously over confident, we’re supposed to mock that confidence as if it’s rooted in some kind of false self image. But maybe I’m reading too much into a movie where “World War II” is meant to be a punchline. Pitch Perfect 2 aca-opens May 15th.
