None of the Disney suits got Jack Sparrow

Johnny Depp and Captain Jack Sparrow are the biggest reasons why the Pirates of the Caribbean movie were so wildly successful and will continue to be with On Stranger Tides next year. So it’s not surprising that the Eisner-era Disney executives that were in charge of Curse of the Black Pearl didn’t get Jack Sparrow in the slightest. In a recent interview with Vanity Fair, Depp mentions Bugs Bunny as an inspiration for Capt. Jack, as well as dishing on how many of the Disney executives didn’t remotely enjoy his character. According to Depp, “…it was Michael Eisner, the head of Disney at the time, who was quoted as saying, ‘He’s ruining the movie.’

He goes on to mention that the other executives wonder if Sparrow was A) gay, B) drunk, or C) “like some kind of weird simpleton.”  He also says to one of the “Disney-ite[s]” that he makes all of his characters gay in order to get a rise out of her, but it just wound up making her really nervous. I don’t understand what compels Johnny Depp’s acting choices sometimes, but damn if the man’s not one of the coolest dudes in Hollywood.
