NYAFF 2012: Director Giddens Ko’s reception speech

[For the month of July, we will be covering the New York Asian Film Festival and the (also New York-based) Japan Cuts Film Festival, which together form one of the largest showcases of Asian cinema in the world. For our NYAFF coverage, head over here. For Japan Cuts, here.]

After dealing with so many translators as part of the New York Asian Film Festival, it was kind of shocking to hear a guest say something in English that wasn’t “Nice to meet you.” It was pretty cool though, even if the English wasn’t exceptional. And so came Giddens Ko, director of You Are the Apple of My Eye and writer of a whole lot of books, which has so far kept its place as my favorite film of the festival. This speech came as part of a reception co-sponsored by Taipei Economic and Cultural Office (TECO), where actress Michelle Chen also spoke (which I also recorded and will be posting later today).

There’s not a lot of stuff in the video, but he’s clearly a pretty awesome guy. I wish I’d gotten to interview him. Missed opportunity, that.

Usual apologies for shakiness apply. This one and the one of Michelle Chen are especially bad because people kept hitting my arms. So everytime you see a jerk of some kind, that’s some guy trying to push his way into my spot. Nonetheless, hope you enjoy.
