Japan Society routinely has excellent screenings and film series throughout the year for fans of Japanese cinema. Right now there’s a special retrospective on flamboyant book publisher and film producer Haruki Kadokawa. The series is called Pop Goes Cinema: Kadokawa Film & 1980s Japan. Curated by Harvard professor Alexander Zahlten, the series started earlier this week and runs until December 17th.
For those unfamiliar with Kadokawa, Dr. Zahlten described him as a “producer of over 70 films and director of six, a prize-winning haiku poet, record-breaking sailor, unrepentant eccentric, and head priest of his own Shinto shrine”.
I know, you want to be this guy’s friend, right?
Six films and a special lecture by Dr. Zahlten are planned for the series, including Virus directed by Kinji Fukasaku (Battle Royale) and The Little Girl Who Leapt Through Time by cult favorite Nobuhiko Obayashi (House).
