NYC: Scary Movies XII to world premiere three-hour director’s cut of Midsommar and more

0

The twelfth installment of the Scary Movies film series returns Lincoln Center from August 16-21. For Scary Movies XII, the Film at Lincoln Center programmers have slated a collection of contemporary and classic horror films and thrillers from across the globe.

The opening night movie is Dan Berk and Robert Olsen’s Villains, while the closing night film is Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett’s fun-looking Ready or Not. The big special attraction at Scary Movies XII is undoubtably the world premiere of the Midsommar director’s cut. This longer version of Ari Aster’s emotionally charged folk horror film will clock in at nearly three hours. Aster is scheduled to be in attendance for a Q&A.

As Jesse pointed out in his review of Midsommar, the movie sort of drags in spots at its current 147 minutes. It’s unclear what an additional 30 minutes is going to add to the experience, though it may paradoxically smooth out some of the sequences in the film that lag. I can only assume they’ll include some part involving Tom Bombadil and the barrow wights, perhaps even The Scouring of The Shire.

Here’s the full list of films for Scary Movies XII. If one of us checks out the director’s cut of Midsommar, expect a recap of additions and how it affects the pace and narrative of the film.
