NYCC: The Boys teaser shows little but has promise

The Boys - NYCC Official Teaser | Prime Video

Garth Ennis is the best thing that ever came out of the terrible period of comics known as the 90’s. There I said it. Yes, there are a few other merits from that decade but Ennis and his writing just embodies so much of the 90’s while still being good that I can’t help but gobble up anything he writes. His work also translates well to the screen, just ask The Punisher, Preacher, and short portions of season 2 of Daredevil.

Hot off the heels of Preacher’s success for AMC, Amazon ordered eight episodes of another one of Garth Ennis’ ultra-violent alternative comics, The Boys. Taking place in an alternate universe where superheroes are corrupt dicks, The Boys centers on the titular group of boys (and one girl) who go around and beat the piss out of heroes who get too out of line. It’s violent, it’s wrong, it’s super anti-Marvel/DC. Basically it’s Garth Ennis boiled down to his essence.

The casting is looking stellar though, with the science fiction king Karl Urban taking the lead as Billy the Butcher. Jack Quaid (The Hunger Games) will play the lead role of Hughie. In supporting roles, Karen Fukuhara (Suicide Squad) will play The Female, Laz Alonzo (Detroit) will play Mother’s Milk, and Tomer Kapon will play Frenchie. Elizabeth Shue will serve as the villain of the show as the Vice-President of Hero Management for Vought, a company that profits from superheroes by renting them out.

No release date outside of a vague 2019 window has been announced, but principal photography is supposedly done so I’m hoping it comes sooner rather than later.
